Story shared: A Man who was Greater than his Legend

Dan was truly a one-of-a-kind individual. I had the pleasure of meeting Dan while I was a member of the Corsicana Country Club a few years back, and befriended him quickly. He had no qualms about telling you to move out from behind his field of vision, which had to be about 359 1/2 degrees! But once you learned to work around his quirks, it was always fun to watch him play and to listen to the stories he would tell! One of my favorite was about the time when he got mad and rode his motorcycle up and down the hallways of Corsicana High School, right up until the principal reached out and grabbed ahold of his handlebar as he passed by, causing Dan to go end over end! He taught me many things while playing golf that I'll never forget, both about the game and about life. I also got to witness shots that a 72 year old man ought not to be able to make, including several near-misses on holes-in-one and the greatest shot I'd seen him hit, which is where the photograph came from. We were at the edge of the Hill on number 7 at the Brickyard in Ferris, about 140 yards out, when he hit a hybrid pure and clean that landed on the green, rolled back and left, and disappeared into the cup, causing Dan to celebrate and the other two golfers with him and I to shout and jump for joy. He had made an Eagle 3 on a long Par 5 at 72 years of age. I was saddened to hear of how Dan's health had deteriorated over the past few years, and even more to know that he's gone from this world. But I know that his pain is no more, and that he's playing the round of his life on the big Golf Course in the Sky. Gabriel had best not blow his horn or stand behind Dan when he putts, however, or I'm sure he'll catch an ear full!

Dear Jean, I am so sorry to learn of Dan's passing. He was indeed a unique individual, and very much his own man. Being raised with his brother, Byron, I was often entertained by Dan's adolescent shenanigans. He was always up to anything he considered a challenge, and there were many! He will be missed. My condolences to you and the family.

We were so sorry to read of Dan’s passing. You two were such a special couple. The brick with the FORD logo on it that y’all gave us is on our mantel to this day. Take care Jean.

My family moved to Bristol, TX from Dallas in 1978. We met Dan a week before moving and he drove all the way to Dallas to help us move. We used to ride motorcycles with Dan and he even gave us one to keep to ride. He and my sister built an ultralight in his barn and then realized it was too big to fit though the doors to get out. We always enjoyed visiting Dan and Jean and their menagerie of geese, llamas and horses. They were wonderful neighbors. Our parents worked in Dallas and we always able to call on them if we needed anything. I was saddened to hear of his passing. Many of my memories of growing up in Bristol include Dan. He was a wonderful person and will be greatly missed.

Jean, We were sad to see the obituary for Dan today. He was one of kind, said what was right or wrong, always with his smile. Dan could be counted on when someone needed help. When he was doing appliance installations for The Jarrell Co. we knew he was a huge asset for his dedication to making sure the customers received more than their moneys worth. He is way up on our hero list. Our condolences to you and all the Ashworth family.

Each of us has a memory - or several - of Dan that we share at every reunion. He was a vibrant part of our class. A generous and gentle soul who was tough as nails. Personally, I will always remember him climbing trees and jumping out of windows, frying eggs on the sidewalk and catching fireflies. Jean, we are sorry for your loss, but we are comforted by knowing that he is truly, finally, at peace.
