Billy Charles Lewis, Sr., 88 of Silver City went to be with the Lord on February 8, 2017. He was born in Powell, Texas, on September 20, 1928. In his prime, Billy toured nationally as a square dance caller. In his later years, he played the fiddle at The Senior Activity Center and at other venues with his fellow musicians in the area.
Billy experienced combat in World War II, serving in the United States Merchant Marines in the North Atlantic. He retired upon 30 years of service at Southwestern Bell Telephone as a Technician. In 1981, he developed the “Lazy L” RV Park on State Highway 31 in Silver City. The RV Park hosted Bluegrass Festivals as well as the Square Dance Hall of Fame.
Billy loved to hook up to the Air Stream and American upon the open road. Rockport, Texas was the favorite fishing destination.
Preceding Billy from this life where his parents Ottis and Sybil Lewis, first wife Mary Lewis and siblings Charlotte Tannehill, Buddy Lewis and Roy Lewis. His (honorary) uncle, Frank Clause, receded him also.
He is survived by his wife, Joanna; son, Billy Lewis, Jr. (Butch) and wife Wanda of Dawson; brother-in-law Paul Tannehill of Corsicana, daughter Becky Fincher and husband Teddy of Corsicana; son David Lewis and wife, Sharen and sons, John and Brayden of Silver City; son Loren White and wife, Cynthia and son, Taylor and daughter, Haley of Dallas; daughter Lynda Lehn and husband, Bob and son, Justin of Dallas, and son, Stephen and wife, Michelle and daughter Catherine, of Frisco. A number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also survive Billy, all with happy memories.
Serving others was Billy’s true calling. He led The Navarro County Republican Party and served on the Dawson ISD School Board of Directors. Billy achieved and served as a Master Mason and as a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 pm, Friday, February 10th at Corley Funeral Home. A celebration of Billy’s life will be officiated by Mike Alexander at 2 pm, Saturday, February 11th at Corley Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Corsicana at Resthaven Memorial Park.
Pallbearers are: Mike Lewis, Justin Lewis, Kelly Daviss, John Arnold, C.W. Fincher, Justin Lehn, Taylor White, and Stephen Lehn. Honorary Pallbearers are: Billy’s fellow musicians.
